How to Use Tags to Target Content to Specific Screens?

Learn how to use media tags and screen tags in EasySignage so one playlist plays different content on different screens.

What do tags do in EasySignage?

Tags let one playlist behave differently on each screen. You tag a media item, tag the screens that should show it, and the player only plays media whose tags match its own, plus any media with no tags at all.

That last part matters. Untagged media plays everywhere, so it is how you keep shared content in the same playlist as the targeted content.

How does tag matching work?

Take one playlist published to three screens. Screen 1 is tagged office1, Screen 2 is tagged office2, and Screen 3 has no tags.

  • Screen 1 plays media tagged office1 and all untagged media
  • Screen 2 plays media tagged office2 and all untagged media
  • Screen 3 plays untagged media only

One playlist, three different loops, no duplicated content.

How do I set up media tags?

  • Open the playlist, click a layer, then click edit on a media item
  • Add one or more tags
  • Enable Tags playback restriction

Without the restriction enabled the tags are just labels, and the media plays on every screen.

How do I set up screen tags?

  • Go to the Screens page
  • Click the orange cog next to the screen, then click Tags
  • Enter one or more tags
  • Click Publish

Media with matching tags is sent to that screen.

Tags or groups: which should I use?

They solve different problems. Use groups when a set of screens should play exactly the same thing and you want to manage them as one unit. Use tags when screens share most of a playlist but each needs a few items of its own, such as a store name, a local price, or a branch-specific notice.

You can combine both. Administrators also use screen tags to limit which screens a team can reach.
