The [EasySignage Open API](https://easysignage.com/digital-signage-features/api-access/) connects your external business systems directly to your digital signage screens so content updates automatically. With this API, your business system can create, read, and modify screens, playlists, schedules and media without accessing the EasySignage dashboard.

As a REST API, it can be connected to any system that can make standard web requests; there’s no need for a proprietary connector, no special SDKs, and no middleware to install.

The result is full automation: content updates flow seamlessly from the source to the screen, playlists and schedules adjust on their own, and screen statuses can be monitored using your own tools.

This post covers what a digital signage API is, what you can build with it, how the EasySignage Open API works, and when it is the right tool for your setup.

## What Is a Digital Signage API?

An API (Application Programming Interface) is a tool that allows two software applications to communicate with each other and exchange data or trigger actions. A digital signage API acts as a bridge between your external systems and your signage platform. It lets those systems automate screen updates, manage content, control devices, and retrieve information programmatically, without a human interacting with the dashboard.

You can think of it as turning your digital signage platform into a headless CMS. The platform still manages rendering, scheduling, and playback, but the instructions come from your own systems through the API, rather than from being input directly via a web interface.

## What Is a REST API?

Most modern digital signage platforms use a REST API. REST, which stands for Representational State Transfer, is a standard architecture for web-based communication. It uses simple HTTP requests to create, read, update, and delete data. Each request is independent, stateless, and returns a predictable response.

What this means in practice: any programming language, any platform, and any tool that can send a web request can talk to the EasySignage Open API. There is no vendor lock-in, no proprietary protocol, and no dependency to manage. Your developers can work with the same methods they already use for integrating with any other API.

## What You Can Automate with a Digital Signage API

Anything you would typically manage manually in the dashboard can instead be controlled by an external system. The EasySignage Open API focuses on four main areas:

### 1\. Automate Screen Updates

When data changes at the source, the screens will automatically update to reflect those changes. Whether it’s a new promotion going live, a shift in pricing, a published announcement, or a change in listings, the system that holds that data sends the update to EasySignage, and the screens will update immediately. No one uploads a file or edits a playlist. The update process happens on its own.

This automation removes the manual steps that most signage networks rely on: someone notices a change, logs in, uploads new content, assigns it to the right screens, and hopes no details were missed. An API removes every step except the initial change.

### 2\. Manage Playlists and Schedules

External systems can create, reorder, and swap playlists programmatically. They can assign schedules, change what plays at certain times, or override content when necessary. A seasonal campaign, a time-of-day rotation, or a content swap triggered by an external event can all be handled through API calls rather than dashboard clicks.

### 3\. Control Screens and Devices

The API provides full visibility into your screen network. You can check the status of every display on the account, see what is currently playing, identify which screens are online, and apply changes to groups of screens in a single request. For organisations managing large networks across multiple locations, this replaces the need to open and check each screen individually.

### 4\. Retrieve Data for Reporting and Monitoring

Your own applications or systems can retrieve information from EasySignage about players, playlists, or media to build monitoring dashboards, uptime reports, or operational views that align with your internal workflows. For example, a support team might track screen health across all locations, while an operations tool might flag devices that have gone offline. The data is available for whatever view your team needs.

## Build Custom Flows Between Your Systems and Screens

The real power of an open API is its flexibility. Instead of forcing you to rely on pre-built integrations for specific tools, you customise how you use it and match how your organisation actually works.

Here are a few examples of what custom flows look like:

- **Conditional Content**:
Your own system’s logic decides what content to display on screens based on various factors like time, location, audience, or any other variable. The API executes these instructions. The signage platform does not need to know or understand the logic; it just receives the outcome.

- **Event-Driven Updates**:
A change in an external system can instantly trigger an update on your screens. The trigger could be a record update, a webhook, a scheduled task, or a status change in any platform your team already uses.

- **Emergency Overrides**:
An alert system can send an urgent message to every screen on the network, overriding whatever content is currently playing. When the emergency is resolved, normal content resumes automatically.

- **Multi-system Orchestration**:
A single workflow may involve several platforms, and EasySignage is one step in the process. Content may be generated in one system, approved in another, and then published to screens through the API as the final step.

These custom flows are not pre-packaged integrations. They are tailored workflows designed by your team to solve the specific problems in front of them.

## When Do You Need a Digital Signage API

Not every setup requires API integration. If content changes once a week and is managed by a single person, a dashboard is often sufficient. However, an API becomes the right tool when:

- **Content changes frequently**: If screens need to display updates multiple times throughout the day instead of just once a week, an API is necessary.

- **Data from multiple systems**: When information displayed on screens comes from various platforms, manually copying it can lead to delays or errors.

- **Management of multiple screens**: Updating dozens or hundreds of displays one at a time is not practical. An API lets you automate screen updates across your entire network in a single call.

- **High importance of accuracy**: Displaying outdated or incorrect information on a screen is worse than no screen at all. Automating updates removes the human lag between a change happening and the screen reflecting it.

- **You want screens to react, not just display**: If you want screens to respond to changes in source systems immediately, instead of waiting for someone to notice and take action, an API is the right solution.

- **Time-consuming repetitive tasks**: If your team spends a lot of time uploading the same types of content, assigning it to the same screens, and adjusting playlists regularly, an API can eliminate these repetitive tasks.

Many organisations start with the dashboard and then transition to API-driven automation as their signage network expands.

## How the EasySignage Open API Works

### 1\. Create an API Key

To create an API Key, go to **Settings > API Keys** in your EasySignage account and select **Create API Key**. Name it for the system or purpose it will serve.

### 2\. Set Permissions Area by Area

Each API key carries its own permissions. You can specify what the key can access across screens, groups, video wall, playlists, channels, zones, sync groups, schedules, folders, and media assets. The permission options are as follows:

- No access: The key cannot interact with that area
- Read only: The key can view content but cannot make any changes
- Full access: The key can view and modify content

Ensure each API key is granted only the permissions necessary for the system that will use it. At least one area must be permitted before a key can be created.

### 3\. Authenticate with a Single Header

Every request carries the key in a single header. The key resolves the account on its own, so there is no interactive sign-in or additional credentials to manage. A key cannot be pointed at a different account than the one it was created under.

### 4\. Use the Built-In Documentation

Open **Settings > API Keys > Open API Docs**, and the interactive reference opens in a new tab, and you will be signed in automatically. There is no separate developer portal or account to request.

It’s recommended to open the documentation from **Settings** rather than bookmarking the page, as the sign-in is generated on the spot.

## Security and Access Control

The EasySignage Open API is built on the principle of least privilege:

- **Scoped Permissions**: Every key is limited to exactly the specific areas it requires access to. For example, a key that only needs to update media will not have the ability to modify screen groups or sync settings.

- **One Key, One Account**: Each key is tied to the account it was created under and cannot be used with another account.

- **Immediate Revocation**: If a key is deleted, it stops working immediately on its next request. There is no grace period for this action. The deletion is recorded in your [account logs](https://easysignage.com/help/account-settings/digital-signage-logs/) for auditing purposes.

- **Uniform Error Responses**: Any request that fails will return the same error message whether the key is unknown, deleted, or lacking the necessary permissions. This design prevents the API from being used to discover existing keys or which accounts have access.

- **No Shared Secrets**: Each key is displayed once at the time of creation and cannot be retrieved later, which limits the risk of exposing stale credentials over time.

## API or AI Assistant: Which Option is Right for You?

EasySignage offers two ways for managing your screens beyond the dashboard:

1. **Open API**:
Use the API when a system needs to automate screen updates repeatedly without human involvement. The API is deterministic. You control exactly what happens and when.

2. **AI Assistant**:
Use the AI assistant when someone on your team needs to make a change by using plain language. EasySignage connects to AI models like [Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini through MCP](https://easysignage.com/digital-signage-features/ai-assistant-mcp/) , so a team member can ask for a change instead of navigating the dashboard.

_For detailed information on how this works, refer to the [**AI assistant blog post.**](https://easysignage.com/blog/26/manage-digital-signage-with-ai-assistant/)_

The two options are not mutually exclusive. An organisation can use the API for routine automated updates while the team uses the AI assistant for ad hoc requests.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is an API?

An API allows external software to communicate with your signage platform. It enables other systems to push content, update playlists, control screens, and retrieve data without anyone logging into the dashboard.

### What is a REST API in digital signage?

A REST API uses standard web requests to create, read, update, and delete data. Any system that can make an HTTP request can connect to a REST-based signage platform. You don’t need a proprietary connector or special software.

### What does “headless CMS” mean for digital signage?

A headless CMS delivers content through an API without a fixed front-end interface. In digital signage, this means your systems control what appears on screens through API calls, while the signage platform handles rendering and playback.

### Do I need to be a developer to use the EasySignage API?

You do not need to be a developer yourself. However, you will need a developer or IT resource to build the integration on your external system’s side. Creating the API key in EasySignage is a simple process and takes a few clicks.

### Does the EasySignage API require a specific plan?

Yes. Open API is included with the Premium and Enterprise plans.

### Can one API key access more than one EasySignage account?

No. Each API key is tied to the account it was created under. If you manage multiple accounts, each one needs its own API key.

### Can I limit what an API key can access?

Yes. Permissions are set for specific areas when the API key is created. You can choose which parts of your account the key can read, change, or not access at all.

### Can I change the permissions on an existing key?

No. Permissions are set at the time of creation and cannot be edited afterwards. To modify what an API key can access, create a new key with the updated permissions and then delete the old one.

### What happens if I delete an API key?

The key becomes inactive immediately on its next request. The deletion will be recorded in your account logs.

### Can I use the API to send emergency alerts to all screens?

Yes. An external alert system can use the API to push content to every screen on your account, overriding whatever content is currently playing. Normal content will resume once the emergency is resolved.
